"Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me." -John 12:26

Wherever you walk with children, you also walk with God.

I hope these ideas for walking meditations offer you opportunities to enjoy the gift of our bodies, and meditate on the presence of Jesus with us and through us.

These walking meditations can be done at home, during a retreat, in a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) atrium, or just walking around. Ages 2.5-6 is considered the “sensitive period” for learning controlled movement. Building on Montessori activities designed for those years, catechist and parent Meagen Farrell developed these walking meditations in response to older children’s continued desire for structured physical challenges to hold their attention and focus their energy. As those children grew, so did the complexity of the activity, thankfully without much more complex materials.

This nine-page download contains activities that require the following materials:

  • Masking tape or painter's tape
  • Items to carry or balance: bell, bead, candle, glass, Bible, etc.
  • Optional: Scissors (for tape)
  • Very optional: Labyrinth mat, floor rug, or garden/stone path

This series of activities is designed for children from ages 3-12:
